India has one of the highest rates of malnutrition, with more than one third of the world's malnourished children living in the country. One of the major causes for malnutrition is economic inequality. Children brought up in poor households find their diet often lacking in both quality and quantity. For children with cognitive disabilities, the challenges can be even more concerning as not only do they and their families live on little or no income, as one of the most marginalised and excluded groups in society, these children have the added weight of social stigma to bear.
Our recently launched Life Food Bank programme supports children with disabilities and their families by providing monthly nutritious food supplies, currently reaching 500 families through 86 schools for children with disabilities across Mumbai.
We also manage support groups for these families giving them the opportunity to interact, exchange views and share experiences.
